| PANJA SAHIB |
|
Gurdwara Panja Sahib is situated in Pakistan in a holy city Hasan Abdal that is not very far off from Rawalpindi. The creation of this sacred Gurdwara is associated with a remarkable event that happened during the early odysseys of Guru Nanak. As per the legend, Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji along with Bhai Mardana visited Hasan Abdal during one of the summer seasons. Finding the environment captivating and enchanting, the Guru and Bhai Mardana started reciting kirtan and the devotees gathered in a big number. This annoyed Wali Qandhari who had established a popular dera near a fountain of sweet water in Hasan Abdal. Finding Bhai Mardana thirsty, the Guru sent him to Qandhari thrice to quench his thirst. But Qandhari not only refused to quench the thirst of Bhai Mardana but also used even vexatious words for him. To quench the thirst of Bhai Mardana, Guru Nanak Dev put aside a big piece of stone lying nearby and a pure fountain of sweet water sprang up. Bhai Mardana quenched his thrist and felt grateful to the Almighty. Curiously the fountain of Wali Qandhari got dried up. Peeved and piqued Qandhari threw a gigantic boulder towards the Guru from the top of the hill. Calm and composed, the Guru not only dead-stopped the rolling rock but also stamped an ineffaceable mark of his holy open hand on the huge stone. The inflated ego of Wali Qandhari vanished and he became a spirited devotee of the Guru. Several attempts were made to deface and blot out the impression of the holy hand of the Guru but all of no avail. The sacred building constructed at this very place is known as Gurdwara Panja Sahib. The great warrior Hari Singh Nalwa after conquering the Sindh province during the Sikh rule got erected this huge building of the Gurdwara and a shimmering pool there. The indelible imprint of the holy Panja is an amazing and astounding symbol of Bhakti and Shakti. |
